Affecting Social Change In The Way We Train Police Officers
Current news reports are increasingly rife with stories about communities clashing with their police departments as a result of excessive force and police misconduct. At the same time, law enforcement agencies are concerned with PTSD, police officer suicides, increased incidence of illnesses amongst police officers, lower than normal life expectancy, depression, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and ethical compromise.
All these problems stem from the same root causes: A career in law enforcement presents challenges to the human spirit, and the pressures of the career deplete officers in a way that is unique to law enforcement.
Officers experiences endless exposure to danger, stress and tragedy, which depletes their reserves of idealism, motivation and personal resilience. Without effective ways to replenish the human spirit, build resilience and restore ethical clarity, it is possible to reach a state of personal “overdraft” or,… worse, “bankruptcy” and that’s when officers make destructive choices.
We believe:
• Resilient Police Officers Promote Healthy Police Agencies
• Healthy Police Agencies Promote Resilient Communities
• Resilient Communities Promote Healthy Police Officers
If we don’t take care of our people, they won’t be able to take care of THE PEOPLE!
Repairing Broken Bonds – Creating Community Role Models – Restoring Trust
The Law Enforcement Survival Institute (LESI) is an assessment, consulting and training organization. We work with law-enforcement professionals and other first responders and their organizations who want to be at their best. Our focus is wellness and resilience.
We suggest a focus on the functional emotional health and readiness of law enforcement officers, as well as the engagement and transparency of police agencies. We encourage neighborhood police officers to act as catalysts to recruit local community leaders and work with them to help build social capital within the areas they serve. We believe that resilience is symbiotic and that building community healthy will build law enforcement wellness, and healthier cops will be better able to properly serve their communities.
We support the health and resilience of people and organizations in the areas that:
• Create and Maintain Individual & Family Wellness and Resilience
• Cultivate a Positive Organizational Culture of Wellness
• Cultivate a Positive Community Culture of Wellness
• Build the Necessary Wellness Support Systems
• Promote Wellness Leadership
• Foster Community Health & Resilience to Build Trust and Positive Community Relationships
We also believe that wellness and resilience are symbiotic systems made up of several critical parts that must work in tandem in order for the whole to be effective.
Our Tactical Resilience™ and Ethical Policing Project is one way the we plan to lend our assistance toward improving policing and building a better “quality of life” in communities around the world.
All of our programs cover tactics to build essential habits in the areas of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strength and development. Tactical Resilience™ is the human quality of strength and fitness exhibited through the mind, body, brain and spirit of a policing professional that allows that person to withstand the rigors and dangers of high-stress situations. A tactically resilient policing professional is physically powerful, emotionally robust, mentally clear and spiritually whole. Moreover, a tactically resilient person is capable of hearing a message of ethical responsibility; such an officer is capable of reaffirming his or her commitment to the ideals of policing with honesty, tolerance, respect, compassion and integrity. We believe that these practices will also develop the kind of officers and agencies that foster public trust and build safer, healthier communities. For the community leaders we will engage them in discussions to build a new community paradigm that includes working directly with their law enforcers.
It all starts with nurturing, building and supporting, mentoring and coaching healthy cops. They are a key component of overall community wellness. We believe that If we don’t take care of our people, they won’t be able to take care of THE PEOPLE!
Stay tuned later this week as we announce all the programs and services that are NEW to The Law Enforcement Survival Institute!

Our “Armor Your Self™: How to Survive a Career in Law Enforcement” on-site training program is an eight hour, hands-on, “How to” seminar based upon John Marx’ book of the same name. The concept of “True Blue Valor™” is where one law enforcement officer has to muster the courage to confront a peer who is slipping both professionally and personally and endangering themselves, their peers and the public. It takes a system of organizational support and professional leadership to support and foster the concept of courage and intervention. We will train your trainers to deliver this program to your agency.
