I met retired police officer Ted Newman earlier this year on a Carnival Cruise to the beautiful islands in the Caribbean. Coinsidentally we were both also in a group that came onto that cruise from around the world to learn more about operating a business on the internet.
It was an amazing trip. Not only did we spend eight days and seven nights on a beautiful ship but we also visited Puerto Rico, St. Thomas USVI, Antigua, Tortola and the Nassau in the Bahamas. What’s more we were part of a group of over 125 internet marketers from 7 countries. While the ship was at sea we spent time together in various facilitated learning sessions exchanging ideas and learning from one another. Ted and I became fast friends and have stayed in touch.
He has had an amazing life, not just an amazing career and is in my mind a success story that other cops can learn from. What does it take to be a successful cop or have success in a law enforcement career? Well as we used to say, if you come home alive you’ve had a good day.
I think it involves a few other things. Not only making it home everyday in one piece but surviving an entire career of police service with your health and all of your faculties makes you successful. Then if you manage to have enough money to live, haven’t committed suicide, haven’t died young of cancer and actually do something with your life after the job, well life is good.
Life is good for Ted.
He started his career in the Royal Air Force (RAF) but after nine years decided that police work was more up his alley so he applied and was selected by the London Metropolitan Police Force and started his career as most of us do working the streets and dealing with people, the good ones and the bad ones. He held this position and worked the street for about 3 1/2 years and then because of an unexpected change in his personal life he went looking to change the area in the Police Force where he was assigned and applied to the Royalty Protection Department. He was accepted and spent most of the rest of his career providing security and protection to the Queen of England, the Royal Family as well as other dignitaries while working in places like Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle, Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle.
Not your average police job, but then what is?
What I think separates Ted for others is that he still wasn’t satisfied and started taking courses on-line to improve himself and his financial situation. He says that he was always good with finances and never really owed anyone anything in his life other than for his mortgage, which is now paid off, so one of the first on-line courses that he subscribed to was a system to make money wagering on horse racing. His home was near Ascot Race Course and this was a natural fit for him. He made “pretty good money” doing this and also exploring other on-line educational programs.
Because of his job he was prohibited from starting his own on-line business to avoid any conflict of interest but he set about making plans for the time after he retired from police service. He noticed that there were a lot of people in the world willing to spend money for informational products (Learning courses, books, audio & video programs) that were sold on the Internet and he started thinking about what skills and talents that he had that he could teach to others. After about ten years of learning, one of the first things he knew a lot about was the on-line information marketplace. So in 2007 after 30 years of pensionable service as a combination of his police service and his time in the RAF, Ted retired and has started a business teaching others how to develop their own information product to make money and do business on the Internet.
What are YOU going to do after the job is over?
What skills or talents do you have that you could capitalize upon?
What knowledge do you possess that others would pay to learn from you?
Ted Newman is a success story, not because of any one thing, but because he served his community with distinction as a police officer and he survived that job with his health and happiness intact, and now he is helping others again.
Good job Ted!
